The day is not complete for my son without eating idlis. This led to this twist in the recipe to amaze him with delicious stuffed idlis. In my current blog, I would like to share with you the recipe of the potato masala and stuffed idli. It is very easy to make as it can be done with very simple ingredients.
This potato stuffed idli is something you can eat even without chutney. As the masala potato stuffed in itself gives a wonderful taste to the idli. Let us get started with the recipe of the delectable potato stuffed idli

We generally stuff potato masala in paratha, dosa , sandwiches and many other dishes. You will be learning similar potato masala that you need to stuff in the idli as well. Ingredients needed to make the Stuffed Potato Idli
Even for the simple recipes, you must be keep all the ingredients ready before you start cooking. This way it will make the cooking more effortless and you will have a fantastic cooking experience.
QUANTITY OF INGREDIENTS for potato masala
Mustard Seeds – ½ teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon of Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon of chilli Powder 1/2 tablespoon coriander powder Vegetable Oil – 2 Tablespoon 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves Salt to taste potato – 2 medium sized onion – 1 cup finely chopped |
Complete Procedure to make the Stuffed Potato Idli
You must first prepare the potato masala and keep it ready, Then making idlis is not going to take time. Potato masala is a regular masala that you can use to stuff in paratha, dosa and sandwich. Once you learn the recipe you can use the same potato masala for various other breakfasts too. Let us now start with the step by step procedure of making potato masala and the stuffed idlis.
Take a pressure cooker and add water to the boil the potatoes
You need a pressure cooker to boil the potatoes. Take a pressure cooker and place it on the stove. Add 2 cups of water enough to boil two medium sized potatoes and keep in in the medium flame
Cut the potatoes into halves, add it to the cooker and boil
You must now cut the potatoes into halves and place it in the cooker. Close the lid and cook the potatoes in the pressure cooker. Let it cool down on its own.
Peel the skin off and mash the potatoes
You must now peel off the skin and mash the potatoes with the help of a vegetable masher. if you dont have a masher you can do it with spoon or fork as well.
Place the frying pan and turn on the stove
Take a frying pan and place it on the stove and keep it in the medium flame.
Add 2 tablespoon of oil and heat the frying pan
When the frying pan is hot enough, add 2 tablespoon of oil to prepare the tempering.
Add 1 teaspoonful of mustard seeds
You must now add a teaspoonful of mustard seeds, let it splutter in the frying pan.
Add the onions and saute them until they became translucent
Take one cup of finely chopped onions . Add them to the frying pan and saute them until it becomes translucent
Add the mashed potatoes and mix well
Now you must add the mashed potatoes to the frying pan and mix well. Make sure the potatoes are mixed well with onions and tempering.
Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and salt
You can all the required spices one by one to the frying pain, Take a 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon chilli powder, 1/2 tablespoon coriander powder and mix well with the potatoes.
Add the coriander leaves, Mix well and let it cool down
At the end , add the 1 tablespoon of coriander leaves mix well and let the mixture cool down on its own
Take the rice idli batter to a bowl
You must now transfer the batter into a bowl and keep it aside. You can also add to adjust the consistency of the batter while adding the water if the batter is thick.
Add 1 cup of water to the idli cooker
Take the idli cooker and add one cup of water and place the idli cooker on the stove.
Grease the stainless steel Idli Moulds
Its important to grease the idli moulds so that the idli will slid off easily from the moulds. You may use ghee or oil in the moulds and spread it well.
Fill half the mould with idli batter
You must now fill the idli moulds with idli batter. You must ensure not to fill the mould full and fill it only half the mould. Reason being , another layer of batter you need to add over the potato masala patties.
Place the potato stuffing in the middle of the idli moulds
Make a small patties of potato stuffing and place in the idli batter in the moulds. You should place the potato stuffing in the center of each mould. Please ensure you place the potato masala as center as possible.
Cover the potato masala stuffing with idli batter
After you place the stuffing to the idli, spread another layer of idli batter over the stuffing. So that you cover the entire potato masala stuffing with the idli batter.
Place the stainless steel Idli moulds in the idli cooker
Turn on the stove and place the idli cooker on it. You must now place the idli moulds into the cooker and close the lid.
Cook the potato stuffed idlis for ten mins
Let the potato stuffed idli to cook for ten minutes on the stove in the medium heat
Make sure idli is cooked well
You can test if the idli is cooked well by running through idli with the knife. If the knife is clean the idli is cooked well.
Remove the stainless steel Idli moulds
You must now remove the idli moulds out of the idli cooker and place it to cool down by itself for sometime.
Serve the potato stuffed idlis
The delectable potato stuffed idlis are ready to be served with hot kurma. Sambhar is one of the best accompaniment for idlis and you can also serve it with hot delicious sambar as well. If you can also try vegetable stuffed idlis with mixed vegetables if you want to give a twist and tweaks to the regular breakfast.
Key tips for worry free recipe of Stuffed Potato idli
Though the recipes are very simple learn and follow, it is important to know the essential tips for successful cooking. I am sharing some of the important tips i always follow to have a good cooking experience
1. Keep all the ingredients ready
Before you start cooking, keep all the ingredients in one place. This makes cooking more efficient and you won’t forget.
2. Ensure to cook the potatoes well
You must ensure to cook the potatoes well in the pressure cooker. Allow atleast five whistles in the pressure cooker. So it can be easily mashed as a smooth paste.
3. Prepare tempering on medium flame
Always prepare the tempering for the potato masala on a medium flame. If you keep it at a high flame, the tempering will burn and give your potato masala the bitter taste.
4. Garnish with Coriander leaves
Once all the process is done in making a masala, garnish it with coriander leaves. Aroma from coriander leaves is so good and also helps in the digestion. Many of the indian dishes uses curry leaves and coriander leaves for aroma and health benefits.
5. Do not overfill the idli moulds
Make sure that you do not fill the idli mould to the brim. After steaming, the idlis will rise, so, make sure you leave a little space for them to rise. Ideally, you should fill a little over three fourth of the idli mould.
6. Remove the idlis carefully
Once the idli is cooked, don’t remove it from the mould instantly. If you try that, the idlis may break. Leave it for a minute or two before removing them from the moulds. If you have difficulty removing the idlis, use a sharp object to loosen it from the edges of the idli mould.
